Fireworks, Special Helmets And Superstar Concerts: How Singapore Changed F1 As The Sport's First Night Race

· 2 min read

The Singapore Grand Prix joined the F1 calendar in 2008 as the sport's first night race. There had been races at sunset and dusk before, but racing on a street circuit late into the evening under floodlights was a new concept. Ahead of the first event at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, there were questions about whether the lights would bother drivers and whether rain would cause glare. Those worries proved unfounded quickly. The lighting system, extensively tested and approved by the FIA, averages around 3,000 lux, roughly four times brighter than most stadiums.

The night setting has also inspired some of F1's most creative helmet designs, with drivers regularly unveiling one-off creations for the race. Five-time Singapore winner Sebastian Vettel was a pioneer of the tradition. The four-time world champion raced in 2012 with a helmet featuring flashing LEDs representing constellations linked to his family and loved ones. He won that race, closing the gap to championship leader Fernando Alonso, and it was a key step towards his title that year. The tradition remains strong, with many drivers choosing chrome, reflective or metallic finishes. Lewis Hamilton has used chrome-inspired designs and George Russell has also made a mark with special helmets. Teams join in too, with special liveries from Mercedes, McLaren and, in 2024, Racing Bulls' denim-look car. Audi will continue the tradition this year with a one-off livery inspired by local culture and artistic themes.

Another Singapore trademark is the fireworks that light up the skyline as soon as the winner takes the chequered flag. They are released trackside and over the waters of Marina Bay, adding spectacle to the victory scenes. Similar post-race displays have since become common at other night races, including Bahrain, Abu Dhabi and Las Vegas.

Music is a key part of the weekend as well. Singapore created a festival atmosphere, with concerts continuing late into the night after on-track sessions end. Artists such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Shakira, Dua Lipa, OneRepublic, Post Malone and Maroon 5 have performed over the years. This season, The Killers, Goo Goo Dolls, Zara Larsson, Lana Del Rey, Janet Jackson and Mark Ronson are set to play during the sprint weekend. The formula has become a blueprint for other events.
